Job description

UPMC Shadyside is hiring full-time Transporters to support the daily operations of the Transportation Services Department located in Shadyside, PA. The shifts and days for these positions will vary.

The Transporters will be responsible for safely and efficiently transporting patients and equipment throughout the hospital, in accordance with established policies and procedures. This fast-paced role involves walking approximately seven miles daily while interacting with patients and contributing to their quality of care.

Responsibilities
  1. Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.
  3. Acquire electrocardiograms (EKGs) compatible with the electrocardiographic management system for nursing units, recognize and resolve computer error messages, and assist other departments in this regard.
  4. Adjust equipment and controls based on physician orders to establish protocols.
  5. Attach electrodes to patients, connect to EKG leads, and operate the EKG machine to obtain readings.
  6. Deliver supplies, equipment, medication, and other materials to patient units and designated areas safely, timely, and accurately, ensuring proper medication handoff with nurses.
  7. Interact with electrocardiographic management systems (Clinicpac, Medipac) via terminal to manage patient charges, verify or correct demographic information, and retrieve EKGs as requested.
  8. Keep patients physically and emotionally relaxed during EKG recordings, maintaining courteous, tactful, and professional interactions.
  9. Maintain a positive attitude characterized by care, concern, and support for patients, visitors, staff, and coworkers, demonstrating behaviors aligned with Service Excellence standards.
  10. Prioritize STAT electrocardiograms when requested, discussing patient conditions with unit staff to determine appropriate prioritization.
  11. Safely transfer patients in and out of hospital beds.
  12. Transport patients, equipment, supplies, specimens, and morgue patients via prescribed vehicles between units, treatment centers, and other areas, ensuring safety, timeliness, and accuracy.
