Job Objective:
Under the immediate management of the Central Transport Supervisor or designee, the Patient Transport Attendant provides transportation of patients throughout the hospital, delivery of beds, gurneys and wheelchairs to units, exchange of portable O2 tanks throughout the hospital, and other special tasks to maintain department functions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist patients in and out of bed, using proper safe patient handling techniques.
- Use wheelchair, gurneys, and other similar mechanisms appropriate to patient needs and safe practice.
- Communicate effectively with hospital staff prior to moving patients.
- Achieve and maintain departmental response time and turnaround time established by management.
- Assess the patient’s needs prior and during transport.
- Follow through with tasks or special projects.
- Report defective equipment to responsible parties.
- Clean and maintain all patient transport equipment as needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge of age-specific needs and behaviors.
- Follow established procedures to verify and transport the correct patient using proper identifiers.
- Verify mode of transportation, obtain patient chart, paperwork, linen, and equipment.
- Transport patients, charts, and equipment safely and effectively throughout the hospital.
- Provide emergency assistance if a patient becomes ill during transport.
- Notify nursing staff of patient transport and destination.
- Assist in transfer processes, requesting assistance for special needs.
- Use all equipment safely and effectively.
- Follow Universal Precautions at all times.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge:
- Experience in Patient Transportation Services or similar.
- Knowledge of hospital operations and patient care.
Skills:
- Skills acquired in patient transportation or similar roles.

- Communicate effectively in English.
- Work effectively under stress.

Education and Experience:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
- Preferred experience in Patient Transport Services or similar.
- Preferred experience in patient care settings.
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) training within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting required.
