Job summary

SageWest Health Care is seeking a Patient Sitter for the MedSurg - Riverton unit. Under RN supervision, you will provide continuous observation and ensure patient safety, assisting with non-clinical tasks to support a calm, safe environment.

This PRN role requires clear English communication, basic critical thinking, and teamwork. Prior healthcare or patient-care exposure is preferred; BCLS and NCI training are required within facility timelines.

Qualifications

• Must read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Must have critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment.
• Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations and respond appropriately.
• Familiarity with translation services (e.g., Language Line) when needed.
• Regular and punctual attendance is required.
• Must be able to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Maintain constant visual observation of assigned patient; never leave the patient alone or out of sight.
• Alert nursing staff promptly when patient requires assistance or shows changes in condition.
• Provide emotional support and companionship to patients.
• Accompany patients off unit for tests or procedures, remaining in close proximity.
• Report hazards or safety concerns to the nurse and help maintain a neat, orderly patient room.
• Record patient behavior and significant events as directed.
• Adhere to infection control and isolation procedures per facility policy.
• Follow RN directions regarding observation protocols, documentation and response to patient behaviors.
• Perform basic support tasks including helping set up meal trays, removing trash, and assisting with linens.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
• Complete mandatory education and training requirements.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Sitter provides continuous observation and monitoring of patients who require enhanced safety measures due to medical or behavioral conditions. The Patient Sitter ensures patient safety by remaining within arm's reach or line-of-sight of the patient at all times, responding quickly to patient needs, and communicating significant changes in patient behavior or condition to nursing staff. Responsibilities include non-clinical support duties, emotional reassurance to patients, and assistance with maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Education

• High School Diploma or Equivalent including education equivalent to completion of secondary school or demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the role. (Preferred)

Licenses/Certifications

• BCLS - Basic Life Support Like AHA or Red Cross Within Facility-Specified time frame (Required)
• NCI -Non-violent Crisis Intervention Or Current Program Within Facility-Specified time frame (Required)

Experience

• Previous healthcare or patient care experience preferred.
