Job Description: The Patient Services Specialist I creates a positive patient experience by exceeding expectations in customer service and patient care. They coordinate clerical and medical activities of a healthcare team, handle patient registration, and facilitate access to UTMB services for both new and returning patients.

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree with no experience required. An equivalent combination of education and experience relevant to the role may be considered.

Qualifications

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Provide high-level customer service in all interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Engage in direct, professional, and knowledgeable interactions with patients, physicians, referral sources, and the treatment team.
  • Answer calls accurately, providing exceptional customer service and meeting caller needs.
  • Document and triage calls appropriately to ensure patient satisfaction and safety.
  • Act as a patient advocate and liaise with various departments to meet mutual goals.
  • Address patient concerns, provide service recovery, and escalate issues as needed.

SCHEDULING:

  • Schedule appointments and make reminder calls to patients.
  • Coordinate financial counseling for day surgeries.
  • Educate patients regarding billing processes and financial responsibilities, including third-party benefits.
  • Provide cost estimates and counsel patients on unpaid bills.
  • Obtain future appointments during visits for follow-up, referrals, and ancillary services.

ARRIVAL:

  • Prepare paperwork and charts for patient visits.
  • Receipt all monies collected, distribute tokens, and authorize deferments.

REGISTRATION:

  • Verify patient eligibility and pre-register patients by collecting demographics and insurance information.
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare and third-party coverage requirements.
  • Communicate with patients, referral sources, and clinical staff regarding access or authorization issues.
