Job summary

A healthcare provider in West Des Moines is seeking a full-time Patient Services Representative to assist clinic visitors and manage administrative tasks. Responsibilities include greeting patients, verifying insurance, and collaborating with departments for seamless service. The ideal candidate has customer service experience, strong communication skills, and preferably an Associate degree. The role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with occasional Saturday shifts and a pay differential for those shifts.

Job description

Job Summary

Professionally greet and assist clinic visitors and patients both in person and via phone. Perform check‑ins and intakes, update patient demographics, verify insurance eligibility, handle inquiries, and manage administrative tasks.

Reports To

Patient Services Supervisor

Essential Functions (85%)
Patient Interaction and Assistance

Warmly greet patients and visitors, providing a professional and compassionate first point of contact. Efficiently handle inquiries, provide information, and offer assistance to patients and visitors both in person and via telephone. Engage patients and team members with check‑in procedures, ensuring accurate collection and updating of patient information into an EHR system. Complete daily walk‑in/telephone intakes. Handle administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, filing, and managing correspondence.

Insurance Verification and Benefit Eligibility

Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility for services rendered. Explain insurance coverage details and financial responsibilities to patients.

Departmental Communication and Support

Collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure seamless patient services. Respond to inquiries from various departments within the clinic promptly and professionally. Complete and apply training to maintain and enhance knowledge of clinic policies, procedures, and relevant software. Attend departmental meetings to stay informed about updates, changes, and improvements.

Other Functions (15%)

Balance and finalize the cash sheet daily. Assist in departmental projects as needed. Complete required training in a timely manner. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proven experience in a customer service or patient‑facing role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on active listening and empathy.
  • Ability to use de‑escalation skills in resolving conflict when necessary.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team.
Preferred Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities
  • Associate degree is preferred.
  • Prior experience with insurance verification processes and understanding of healthcare billing procedures.
  • Knowledge of compliance regulations such as HIPAA.
  • Familiarity with medical billing, Microsoft Office Suite, and Teams.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be accessible by phone or email regularly to address operational needs.
  • Communicate with others to exchange information.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and work on a computer.
  • Valid driver's license required and liability insurance or equivalent personal transportation to travel within the state of Iowa.

Full‑time 40 hours a week. Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM‑5:00 PM; occasional Saturday opportunities. A shift pay differential currently applies to all Saturday shifts for this position.
