Job summary

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences is seeking a Patient Services Representative to join the clinic team. You will be the first point of contact, provide courteous service, register patients, and support scheduling and billing tasks in the EHR.

You will collaborate with providers, students, and staff, uphold HIPAA, and participate in trainings. This non-exempt role offers a structured environment with growth potential and a focus on patient-centered care.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree or post-secondary education in healthcare, business, or a related field preferred.
  • One year of customer service or administrative experience required.
  • Exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as first contact for patients and visitors with professional, courteous service; direct calls and maintain a welcoming reception.
  • Maintain provider schedules by coordinating appointments and follow-ups to optimize access and efficiency.
  • Register patients, verify insurance, obtain referrals and prior authorizations, and maintain forms in the EHR.
  • Complete check-in/check-out, process payments, assist with billing inquiries.
  • Prepare schedules and visit docs; manage records and referrals; provide administrative support.
  • Collaborate with staff; maintain HIPAA compliance; participate in trainings and meetings; support process improvements.

The Patient Services Representative (PSR) serves as a key member of the clinic team, delivering exceptional customer service and supporting patients throughout their care journey. This role helps ensure a positive patient experience while supporting efficient clinic operations and continuity of care.

What you’ll do:

Patient Experience & Customer Service
  • Serve as the first point of contact for patients, visitors, students, and callers by providing professional, courteous, and compassionate customer service; answer and direct calls, respond to questions or concerns, and maintain a welcoming, organized reception area.
  • Maintain provider schedules by scheduling, rescheduling, and coordinating appointments, follow-up visits, and wellness exams to optimize patient access and clinic efficiency.
  • Register patients, maintain demographic information, verify insurance eligibility and benefits, obtain referrals and prior authorizations, and ensure required forms and documentation are completed and accurately maintained in the EHR.
Check-In, Check-Out & Revenue Cycle Support
  • Complete patient check-in and check-out processes, collect and reconcile patient payments, prepare deposits, and assist with insurance follow-up activities and patient billing inquiries.
Administrative & Clinical Support
  • Prepare clinic schedules and visit documentation; manage medical records, referrals, and outside documentation; maintain accurate records in the EHR; and provide administrative support to providers, students, and clinic staff.
Teamwork & Organizational Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with providers, students, leadership, and team members; maintain HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality; participate in required training and meetings; support process improvements; and perform other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree or post-secondary education in healthcare, business, or a related field preferred.
  • One year of customer service or administrative experience required.
  • Exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while using Microsoft Office and EHR systems.

Pay Rate: $23.77 per hour to start, increasing to $24.73 per hour after 6 months.
