Job description

Patient Services Coordinator

General Summary:

Under general supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, performs all clerical business functions in a medical office, clinic, or ambulatory setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Medical Terminology, ICD-9, and CPT coding experience required.
  • Computer/typing skills of at least 40 wpm.
  • Medical secretary, medical assistant program graduate, or medical office experience (minimum of one year) required.
  • Legible handwriting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Sensitivity to patient care situations.

Working Conditions:

Work is in a patient care environment. May experience mental stress due to a fast-paced environment and multiple sources of direction.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Secure, complete, and verify all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information; enter data into computer.
  2. Perform initial telephone triage and refer to appropriate medical professionals.
  3. Schedule patients following protocols, including referrals, testing, surgeries, and specialist consults, ensuring insurance appropriateness.
  4. Collect co-pays and payments, balance cash drawer, and ensure accurate deposits.
  5. Organize patient charts, obtain consent forms, and maintain confidential records.
  6. Review visit data, determine ICD-9 and CPT codes, and enter data into the system.
  7. Enter billing charges, retrieve data, and run reports as needed.
  8. Perform some patient care duties (see department addendum).
  9. *Document information in patient medical records.
  10. *Manage office supplies and inventory.
  11. *Perform receptionist, file clerk, and general office duties.
  12. *Float as needed based on staffing.
  13. *Adhere to standards and policies of the Corporate Responsibility Program and report unethical or unlawful acts.
  14. Demonstrate behaviors aligned with Mercy Health Partners' Mission and Core Values.
  15. Promote excellent customer service and accountability.
  16. *Perform additional duties as assigned.

Ensure adherence to safety and patient safety standards. Provide age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles through continuing education. Interpret patient information to meet age-specific needs across the lifespan: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
