Job summary

UnitedHealth Group's Optum unit in Indianapolis is seeking a Patient Service Representative to handle appointment scheduling, patient registration, cashiering, and front office support.

This role requires exceptional customer service, greeting patients, verifying insurance, processing co-pays, handling phones, and coordinating with back-office staff to maintain smooth patient flow.

Schedule is Monday to Friday; 8-hour shift during 7:15am-5pm EST; travel to Carmel may be required for training.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • At least 1 year of telephonic or face-to-face customer service experience.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) or equivalent software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional service to all customers
  • Greets patients as they arrive and manages wait time
  • Complete check-in and check-out tasks to include insurance verification and copy required documents
  • Collects co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles and issues receipts
  • Manages cashier box and daily deposits according to company policies
  • Processes walk-in patients and visitors
  • Answers phones and schedules appointments as necessary, verifying correct visit type and primary care provider
  • Work with back-office staff to ensure smooth patient flow
  • Resolve service issues and complaints, and defer to appropriate management or clinical personnel when necessary
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public

ThePatient Service Representative is responsible to the Center Administrator and provides appointment scheduling, patient registration, cashiering, answers incoming calls and performs other related clerical functions. This primary role provides front office support functions.

Schedule:Monday - Friday, 8-hour shift between the hours of 7:15am-5pm (typically 8am-5pm) EST. Schedule to be determined by manager upon hire.

Location: 7151 Marsh Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46278. Some travel may be required to Carmel, IN for training, as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional service to all customers
  • Greets patients as they arrive and manages wait time
  • Complete check-in and check-out tasks to include insurance verification and copy required documents
  • Collects co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles and issues receipts
  • Manages cashier box and daily deposits according to company policies
  • Processes walk-in patients and visitors
  • Answers phones and schedules appointments as necessary, verifying correct visit type and primary care provider
  • Answer telephone calls, re-direct calls as appropriate, assist callers with questions or concerns, and take messages as needed
  • Manages medical records (maintains, files/scans, prepares for schedule)
  • Ensures all correspondence is scanned and/or filed, processes requests for medical records release and maintains appropriate logs, etc.
  • Responsible for waiting room management cleanliness, communicate pertinent information to patients and ensure all patients have been assisted
  • Work with back-office staff to ensure smooth patient flow
  • Resolve service issues and complaints, and defer to appropriate management or clinical personnel when necessary
  • Assist co-workers and team members with duties when requested, to include but not limited to, floating to other areas
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 1+ years of telephonic or face to face customer service experience
  • Basic level of proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) or equivalent productivity software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in a healthcare setting or medical setting
  • Previous experience with medical insurance
  • Prior experience with EMR computer applications
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $16.00 to $29.00 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
