Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) seeks a Patient Safety Companion on the Float Team to monitor adult and pediatric units across the downtown campus. You will provide continuous one-on-one observation to ensure safety and comfort while supporting the interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications

Job Description
Job Summary/Purpose

The Patient Safety Companion reports to the Staffing Office and Hospital Supervisors to obtain unit assignments. Under general supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Patient Safety Companion monitors the patient closely at all times and never leaves the patient alone to ensure patient safety. This role assists patients with activities of daily living and performs other general patient care duties as directed by the Registered Nurse. The Patient Safety Companion notifies the Registered Nurse immediately of any patient concerns. When not functioning as a Patient Safety Companion, this role provides clerical support for the nurse’s station as assigned.

Minimum Training and Education

Patient Safety Companion I: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Patient Safety Companion II: High School Diploma/Equivalent and ONE of the following requirements must be met.

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree
  • 1 year of experience in behavioral health facility
  • At least 1 year of PSC I (.6 FTE +) experience at MUSC
  • Active enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Basic Life Support required within 4 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
