Job summary

McLaren in Pontiac, MI is seeking a per diem nursing assistant to closely observe patients at risk and assist with daily activities under an RN supervision. You will help maintain a safe, clean environment and support patient comfort and safety throughout shifts.

The role requires a nursing assistant program completion, a high school diploma or GED, and at least one year of related experience. You will work in a team, communicate professionally, and document events for RN review.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains verbal report from the patient’s nurse including care needs, diagnosis, barriers, and special considerations.
  • Maintains constant visual observation of the patient by positioning at the bedside.
  • Obtains instruction from nurse regarding ambulation limitations and redirection.
  • May accompany the patient to tests or procedures and remain within arm’s length.
  • Promotes patient comfort, safety, and a clean, safe environment.
  • Works as part of a team and responds to changing patient/unit needs.
  • Communicates professionally with patients, families, and health care staff.
  • Records data accurately and notifies RN of untoward events.
  • Performs other related duties as required and directed.

Job description

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of an RN, provides close, continuous observation of patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury or harm to others. Assists in the provision of a safe and clean environment. Provides assistance with activities of daily living, unless the patient needs are such that adverse health consequences are predictable.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities as Assigned:
  1. Obtains verbal report from the patient’s nurse to include information regarding the patient’s identified care needs, diagnosis, visual, auditory, or language barriers, as well as any special consideration (NPO, bed alarms, etc.).

  2. Positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient. Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.

  3. Obtains instruction from nurse regarding ambulation limitations and course of action for redirection of patient if needed.

  4. May not transport patient for testing and procedures off the unit but must accompany and remain within arm’s length of patient unless otherwise directed by the person performing the test or procedure.

  5. Provides for patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction. Maintains patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.

  6. Functions cooperatively as a team member. Responds as directed by responsible nurse to changing patients’/unit’s needs. During a patient or environmental emergency, may serve as a runner or transport patients as directed.

  7. Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patient, families/significant other and other health care members.

  8. Accurately and legibly records data collected and notifies RN of any untoward events, i.e., behavioral changes, violent behavior, etc.

  9. Performs other related duties as required and directed.
