Job summary

The Patient Safety Assistant (PSA) at John Peter Smith Hospital supports a safe environment for patients at risk, working within the House Operations unit on day shifts. This role contributes to reducing injuries and ensures compliance with hospital policies.

Responsibilities include monitoring at-risk patients, notifying nurses as needed, assisting with daily living activities, and documenting behaviors per policy.

Qualifications

• Completion of Therapeutic Options within 90 days of hire.
• Current JPS recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and must be maintained.
• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Some work experience (less than 6 months).

Responsibilities

• Observes and monitors patients identified to be at risk for self-injury, fall, and/or otherwise behaviorally impaired.
• Notifies the patient’s nurse when patient displays actions or behaviors suggesting the patient will cause harm to themselves or others or when the patient is unable to utilize the call light and is requesting assistance.
• Attends to patients activities of daily living and will obtain and report vital signs and intake and output to the primary nurse.
• Documents patient behavior according to District policy 910-032 during their assigned shift using all required forms or reporting systems as appropriate.
