Job Summary:
Responsible for the accurate and timely registration and scheduling of patients. Will work in various settings including ER, Admitting, and the Scheduling Office. Also provides coverage for switchboard operators and scheduling staff. Register patient accounts, insurance, and ensure authorizations are valid.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Initiates patient registration by conducting thorough interviews to obtain accurate demographics and insurance information; completes non-patient registrations accurately.
- Obtains signatures from patients or their representatives to ensure proper documentation in Medical Records.
- Contacts insurance companies to verify eligibility, benefits, and mailing addresses within 24 hours of admission for inpatient, observation, and SDC accounts.
- Collaborates with patient care staff to determine bed assignments, ensuring timely notification of bed availability and chart delivery.
- Verifies insurance eligibility for outpatient accounts by contacting insurance companies.
- Gathers surgical information from surgeons' offices, generates pre-op and surgical account numbers to facilitate patient flow to SDC.
- Supports pre-operative testing admissions to ensure smooth patient flow with correct account information.
- Prioritizes tasks based on changing customer needs.
- Performs all duties related to scheduling operations when assigned.
- Accurately files outpatient orders and maintains knowledge of standing orders and MD expiration notifications.
- Assists in training new employees on patient access processes.
- Maintains knowledge of registration policies and procedures; provides coverage for ED registration during breaks or high volume.
- Knows procedures for registration system downtime and contributes to efficient system operation.
- Supports system development and maintenance for department efficiency.
- Displays a positive attitude, cooperates, and adheres to Heywood's performance standards, including telephone etiquette and patient interactions.
- Handles electronic and web-based payer eligibility inquiries.
- Registers MABRs within one hour of receipt.
- Ensures Endo authorizations are completed and accurate by contacting MD offices and insurance companies.
- Immediately reports backlogs or obstacles to supervisors.
- Attends at least 8 staff meetings annually.
- Performs duties related to switchboard operations when assigned.
- Completes status changes accurately and notifies insurers as needed.
- Spells all information correctly, especially diagnoses.
- Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly data and statistics, including the duty board.
- Inputs and scans insurance authorizations accurately.
- Recognizes problems and contacts insurance companies or MD offices to resolve issues.

Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and handles objects, reaching and handling as needed.

Qualifications
Job Requirements
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional training preferred.
Minimum Work Experience: Knowledge of medical terminology, spelling, computer skills; billing experience and Meditech knowledge preferred.
Required Skills: Excellent communication, multitasking ability, courteous interaction with patients and staff, high accuracy for patient and financial data.
