Job description

POSITION PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Registrar is responsible for scheduling, insurance verification, patient registration, and related functions to ensure accurate and timely processing of hospital patients. Acts as the first contact for providers and patients, supporting hospital operations and promoting patient safety through adherence to established policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

This description outlines the primary duties but is not exhaustive. Additional related tasks may be assigned as needed.

  1. Complete registration and scheduling according to protocol, ensuring accurate patient, insurance, and demographic data.
  2. Maintain high standards of customer service, registration accuracy, and productivity. Review and correct registration errors daily.
  3. Ensure proper documentation and verification for upcoming appointments, including insurance and referral requirements. Reschedule if pre-authorization is not met within 24 hours.
  4. Promote safety by proper patient identification, reporting, and documentation. Ensure all patients are arm-banded before registration completion.
  5. Follow check-in procedures, including electronic timestamping and compliance with EMTALA regulations, especially in the Emergency Room.
  6. Assist patients with Patient Portal registration to meet Meaningful Use standards.
  7. Accurately document all registration activities, flag accounts for collections or corrections as necessary.
  8. Use payer systems to verify benefits, assign plans, and perform pre-certifications at the point of service.
  9. Discuss Coordination of Benefits with patients, record payer information correctly, and document results.
  10. Explain registration forms to patients and obtain signatures in compliance with regulations.
  11. Perform Medical Necessity screening as required, communicate results, and complete ABN forms when necessary.
  12. Calculate patient financial responsibility and perform point-of-service collections as per policy.
  13. Manage cash drawer and participate in daily reconciliation and deposits.
  14. Adhere to legal and safety policies, maintain confidentiality, and handle PHI appropriately.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.
  16. LATITUDE, CONTACTS/INTERACTIONS

    Interact with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver quality care and service.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: High school diploma or GED required.

    Experience: Prior hospital or practice experience preferred.

    Skills: Strong computer, communication, and customer service skills required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

    Frequent sitting and reaching; occasional standing, walking, lifting, and pushing. Visual and hearing acuity required. Work environment is indoor with typical healthcare safety precautions.

    Potential exposure to chemicals, infectious agents, and blood-borne pathogens.
