Job summary

Howard Brown Health in Chicago seeks a Patient Financial Services Specialist to support the revenue cycle and assist with patient and insurance billing issues. You will work under the Billing Manager to resolve claim errors, verify coverage, and communicate billing details to internal staff.

The role requires healthcare billing experience, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in EMR systems and MS Office. The position is hybrid with on-site training and some remote work after training.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED required.
  • At least two years of experience in healthcare billing.
  • Solid knowledge of billing and financial concepts.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Polished oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and EMR software.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Billing Manager with resolving claim errors in Avality (clearinghouse).
  • Assist billing team in obtaining insurance information from patients and verifying benefits.
  • Answer and resolve questions regarding lab and clinic bills.
  • Review and manage patient and insurance accounts receivable.
  • Ensure charges are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Audit sliding fee applications to ensure appropriate fee assessment.
  • Verify proof of income and sliding fee applications for uninsured patients.

Pay: $20.61/hour

Hybrid Schedule:During training, this position requires on-site work Tuesday–Thursday (3 days per week). Upon successful completion of training, the schedule transitions to approximately one on-site day per week, with the remaining days remote.

What you can expect:

Under the direct guidance of the Billing Manager, the Patient Financial Services Specialist assists with the revenue cycle process, helps resolve patient and insurance billing issues, and communicates with internal staff regarding billing activities.

How you will make an impact:

  • Assist the Billing Manager with resolving claim errors in Avality (clearinghouse)
  • Assist billing team in obtaining insurance information from behavioral health patients and conducting a detailed benefit and eligibility verification of insurance benefits
  • Assist billing team with answering and resolving patients’ questions and concerns regarding third-party laboratory bills and clinic bills
  • Assist billing team in reviewing and managing patient and insurance Accounts Receivable (A/R)
  • Assist billing team in ensuring charges are submitted in a timely manner
  • Assist billing team in auditing sliding fee applications to ensure that patients were assessed at the appropriate sliding fee scale
  • Assist billing team in obtaining and verifying proof of income and sliding fee applications for uninsured patients
  • Assist billing team in auditing sliding fee applications to ensure that patients were assessed at the appropriate sliding fee scale copay
  • Serve as resource for questions from PSR and Call Center staff relating to revenue cycle processes
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIRED:

Required:

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED required
  • At least two years of experience in healthcare billing setting
  • Strong technology proficiencies in electronic medical records and Microsoft Office.
  • Must have solid knowledge of billing and financial concepts.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills required.
  • Capable of making timely, independent decisions in an administrative setting.
  • Highly organized with coordinator background helpful.
  • Polished oral, written and interpersonal communications skills required to provide timely and exceptional customer service to patients and internal staff
