Responsibilities & Requirements

Patient Financial Advocate Specialist

This individual is responsible for pre-screening and enrolling self-pay (uninsured and underinsured) patients for external financial assistance programs, primarily focusing on Medicaid. They assist patients in completing financial assistance applications, educate them about their financial responsibilities, and help identify ways to resolve balances. The role involves communication with patients both in person and over the phone, requiring a high level of customer service.

  • Pre-screens uninsured and underinsured patients to identify potential financial assistance opportunities.
  • Assists patients without valid insurance coverage with enrollment in programs including Medicare, Medicaid, and other state-based assistance programs.
  • Ensures financial assistance applications are accurately completed before submission.
  • Provides staffing coverage at other Kettering Health hospital facilities as needed.
  • Works with on-site social workers or outside vendors to complete Medicaid applications, maximizing funding based on eligibility.
  • Conducts comprehensive interviews to determine eligibility for Medicaid, charity care, and other programs.
  • Provides patients with personalized financial assessments, coverage explanations, and estimated patient liabilities.
  • Initiates payment arrangements and collects patient liabilities after financial assistance is approved.
  • Educates patients on insurance terms, billing statements, and their financial responsibilities.
  • Stays informed of statutes and regulations affecting receivable collection.
Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least two years of relevant work experience demonstrating communication and organizational skills.

Minimum Work Experience

  • Experience in financial counseling, eligibility screening, or Medicaid application processing strongly preferred.
  • Experience in community outreach preferred.
  • Familiarity with statutes and regulations impacting financial discussions.
