Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Patient Services Representative to welcome patients, educate them on copayments, collect payments, verify insurance, and schedule follow-ups. You will guide patients through self-check-in, register demographics, and connect them with financial advocacy resources to ensure a smooth UPMC experience across physician practices, hospitals, and outpatient services.

You will promote the MyUPMC patient portal, assist with registration, and help patients navigate the healthcare system,

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two years of experience in a medical/billing/customer service role preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide a warm greeting for all patients.
• Guide patients through self-arrival technology or check-in at desk as appropriate.
• Collect copayments and other payments at the point of service.
• Confirm and/or update patient registration information at checkout.
• Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
• Schedule or connect patients to resources for ancillary services.
• Help patients navigate the health care system with clear instructions.
• Follow up on unresolved questions to ensure continuity of care.
• Understand service recovery principles and act to recover from subpar service.
• Register patients in Biometrics and explain benefits.
• Promote MyUPMC portal and assist with registration.
• Advise patients on financial responsibility and connect to advocacy resources.
• Verify insurance benefits with carriers via online systems or phone calls.
• Obtain signature for consent to treatment and financial responsibility per HIPAA rules.
• Triage phone calls to other areas/clinical providers.
• Assist with administrative duties (scanning, faxing).
• Stay informed on navigation of the UPMC Patient Portal and explain usage clearly.
