Job summary

UnityPoint Health in Des Moines is seeking a Patient Care Technician to deliver hands-on patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. You will assist with activities of daily living, mobility, nutrition and preparation of patients and environments for procedures, while documenting observations.

This role requires CNA certification or equivalent and BLS certification. You must be able to lift and position patients.

Qualifications

• CNA certification preferred
• Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire
• Must be 16 years old or older
• Level 3 Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Responsibilities

• PCTs will perform patient care and treatments under supervision of a RN; provides and documents activities of daily living, mobility, specimen collection and respiratory support as directed by the RN
• Ability to lift, move, position and transport patients
• Demonstrates ability to meet the department work schedule
• Demonstrates initiative to improve quality of care, patient and employee safety, and customer service
• Team members under 18 may not independently operate mechanical lift equipment

Overview

Shift: 7pm-730am, every 3rd weekend and holiday rotation; 24 hours/week

Under the direction of a licensed professional, the Patient Care Technician delivers hands‑on patient care and comfort, assists with clinical procedures and technical tasks, and accurately observes, reports, and documents patient status. The role supports safe, efficient unit operations by focusing on personal care, mobility, nutrition, hydration, elimination, and prevention of complications, while preparing patients and environments for procedures. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, the PCT provides compassionate, patient- and family-centered support across diverse care settings to promote quality outcomes and a positive experience.
