Job summary

UnityPoint Health in Cedar Rapids is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support telemetry monitoring and patient care. The role includes cross-training to cover unit secretary duties and to assist with medication transport as needed.

The incumbent will interpret EKG rhythms, maintain infection control, and communicate findings to the care team while documenting in the EMR. A basic rhythm course and BLS certification are required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Basic rhythms course training within 3 months from date of hire.
  • Current BLS certification or obtain within 3 months from date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret, store, and print EKG rhythms from an electronic platform.
  • Assist PCT/US with patient care or clerical duties to support department operations, including transport of non-controlled medications.
  • Adhere to infection prevention standards when cleaning and disinfecting portable telemetry monitors and accessories.
  • Communicate effectively with health care team about abnormal EKG rhythms and real-time EMR documentation; perform shift handover.
  • Apply Comfort Theory and CARE concepts in professional practice.

Overview

Provides continuous surveillance of patient telemetry, accurately interprets cardiac rhythms and related parameters, documents findings per protocol, and promptly alerts the care team to significant changes. This role will also be expected to cross train as a Patient Care Technician. Refer to the Patient Care Technician job description for a full listing of those requirements.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence

  • Have knowledge to accurately interpret, store, and print EKG rhythms from within an electronic platform.
  • Support hospital operations by assisting in duties basic to the patient care technician (PCT) or unit secretary (US) role of patient care or clerical nature to support department operations. A specific duty may be the transport of non-controlled medications within the hospital.
  • Adhere to infection prevention standards of care when cleaning and disinfecting portable telemetry monitors and accessories.
  • Demonstrate effective and professional communication skills. This includes verbal communication with other health care providers regarding abnormal EKG rhythms which may or may not be life-threatening. This includes real-time electronic documentation communication within the EMR. This includes effective shift to shift handover communication, written and/or verbal.
  • Embody principles Comfort Theory and C.A.R.E. (Comfort, Accountability, Relationship-centered, Evidence-based) professional practice model within the role.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Complete basic computer course for EMR functionality (or demonstrate equivalent knowledge)
  • Must complete basic rhythms course within three (3) months from date of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.
