Patient Care Technician

Location:

IMCU, 3 Surgical Step Down

Schedule:

36 hours per week, Permanent Nights, Every Other Weekend

About the Critical Care/3W IMCU Department at Boston Medical Center:

BMC's Surgical Step Down unit is a 38-bed unit providing care for intermediate-level surgical patients. The patient population includes post-operative and surgical specialty patients, such as trauma, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, transplant, and cardiothoracic surgery.

Position Summary:

As a Patient Care Technician in our Critical Care department, you will be a key member of the healthcare team at BMC. Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice, you will provide direct clinical and support services. Using our patient-centered care model and supported by a dedicated nursing organization, you will participate in delivering care to our patients and their families, working cooperatively with all healthcare team members to meet patient, family, and staff needs.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Perform delegated patient care interventions, including obtaining vital signs, bathing, feeding, dressing wounds, assisting with hygiene, cleaning rooms and linens, and providing emotional support.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-equipped environment by managing environmental and inventory activities.
  • Contribute to the efficient operation of the department to ensure quality patient and family outcomes.
Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current certification in basic life support (BLS) and CPR (must be obtained within 30 days of employment if not already certified)
  • Ability to pass clinical competency testing
  • Physical ability to perform job duties
  • Basic math and computer skills
  • One of the following:
    • One year of experience as a Patient Care Technician in an acute hospital setting
    • Enrollment in a nursing program with two completed clinical rotations
    • Completion of an approved Patient Care Technician training program
    • Completion of an approved certified medical assistant training
    • One year of experience as an EMT or field medic (for adult ED positions only)
  • Fluency in another language is a plus
  • Previous medical/surgical experience is preferred
