The Patient Care Technician provides patient care, supports activities of daily living (both independent and dependent), takes vital signs, assists with mobility and ambulation, performs phlebotomy, point of care testing, EKG testing, peripheral IV removal, specimen collection, and Foley catheter insertion and removal. They comply with patient safety practices under the direction of a professional RN nurse. They observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions, document findings accurately and promptly, and report any changes to the nursing or medical staff. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days of hire.

Acceptable educational programs include: Graduates of Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), US Navy Hospital Corps School, Emergency Services (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic), or current students enrolled in a clinical program (RN, LPN, RT, or PT) having completed at least one semester, or recent work experience as a PCT or Nursing Assistant within the last three years.
For Safety Partners, de-escalation and physical intervention training is required within 30 days of hire (15 days for Behavioral Health).
