UPMC St. Margaret is currently hiring a Full-Time Patient Care Technician to join our 3B Step Down Unit.
This position will work rotating 12-hour shifts, consisting of 6:00 am - 4:00 pm and 6:30 pm - 7:00 am. There is no travel to other facilities, but there may be times when you are pulled to a different unit at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital.
The final candidate will be placed in the appropriate title and salary based on education and experience.
Responsibilities:
- Provide patient care, including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
- Perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) and at least four of the following tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
- Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Establish effective communication with other departments. Maintain professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Contribute to universal unit activities such as responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Constructively receive feedback and direction. Identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director. Take actions to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. Request assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed. Participate in self-review as requested.
- Provide instruction to patients and their families under the RN's supervision. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team. Understand cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in health professions. Support safety in the workplace. Develop and maintain productive working relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
- Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information. Comply with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.
- Suggest and support changes within the department. Take responsibility for assignments and view problems as challenges. Be aware of how behavior impacts department efficiency. Support department projects and quality initiatives.
- Document in the medical record according to established procedures. Perform work efficiently and complete clerical functions as needed.
- Perform standard competencies, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, repositioning), point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application, and prevention of HAC & PSI (TEDs/SCDs). Also, perform simple dressings, restraint placement/removal, bladder scans, specimen collections, and other assigned tasks.
- Report equipment malfunctions. Communicate effectively with departments. Maintain professional relationships and contribute to unit activities.
- Receive feedback, identify learning needs, and participate in self-review. Communicate effectively within the healthcare team. Support safety and develop productive relationships.
- Provide patient care, assist with procedures, and report patient status changes. Educate patients and families. Follow policies for patient safety and hospital information. Document appropriately and perform clerical tasks.
- Achieve and maintain competency in at least one advanced skill (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube management) based on departmental needs.
