Job summary

UPMC is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the 3B Step Down team in Pittsburgh. The role involves assisting with patient procedures, daily living activities, and supporting therapies under RN direction. You will float to Med/Surg units as needed and participate in the PCT career ladder, with shifts of 12 hours on days or nights and alternating weekends/holidays.

Final placement depends on education and experience, with emphasis on teamwork and patient safety as you grow within the department.

Responsibilities

• Assist with patient procedures and daily living activities.
• Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
• Provide feedback to the RN and report changes in patient status.
• Perform core nursing assistant tasks (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) and at least four of the following: Phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, Simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, Point of care testing, Bladder scan, Straight catheter, IV catheter removal.
• Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively with other departments.
• Contribute to unit activities (responding to call lights, passing meal trays, transporting patients).
• Receive and act on feedback, identify learning needs, and participate in self-review.
• Provide patient and family instruction under RN direction; apply, monitor, and remove restraints as needed.
• Adhere to all patient care policies and safety procedures.
• Document in medical records and perform clerical functions as needed.
• Support department projects and quality initiatives.

Join our 3B Step Down team as a Patient Care Technician!

This position works three 12-hour shifts per week, rotating between days (7 AM–7 PM) and nights (7 PM–7 AM), with alternating weekends and holidays. PCTs may occasionally float to Med/Surg units throughout the hospital, typically once a month or less.
