Job Description

General Summary

Under the direction of professional nursing staff, provides direct patient care, including taking vital signs, checking surgical dressings, assisting with activities of daily living, performing blood draws, and collecting specimen samples. Observes and communicates patient status to identify needs and provide appropriate care, serving as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Performs testing and manages patient care based on results and clinical findings.
  • Records patient care activities, including ADLs such as feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, and transferring.
  • Documents vital signs, pain levels, and other relevant patient data.
  • Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
  • Participates in cost-effective strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Promotes patient safety, including fall prevention and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Maintains cleanliness and order in patient rooms and work areas, manages supplies and linen.
  • Provides post-mortem care as needed.
  • Collaborates with healthcare team members to implement and communicate the care plan, reporting changes in patient condition.
  • Ensures patient comfort and monitors pain levels.
  • Measures and records dietary intake, urinary and stool output, weight, and calorie counts.
  • Performs urinary catheter care, blood glucose monitoring, wound care, and specimen collection following proper procedures.
  • Provides orthopedic/rehab device care, participates in hourly rounding, and responds to patient alarms.
  • Follows safety protocols, reports adverse events, and maintains vigilance for safety risks.
  • Uses proper body mechanics and lifting techniques, improves patient flow, and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Maryland certification as CNA or GNA required.
  • No prior experience required; healthcare experience preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize, multitask, and perform under stress.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Proper technique for blood glucose testing and documentation.
  • Ability to perform delegated nursing tasks considering patient diversity.
