Job summary

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician to support a fast-paced postpartum unit. You will assist with daily living activities, patient procedures, and various therapies while communicating patient status to RNs.

This role requires compassionate care for mother-baby families and adherence to hospital protocols. Shifts are 6:30am–7pm or 6:30pm–7am with rotating holidays/weekends.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • One of: 1 year general healthcare experience; Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with at least one clinical rotation; Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care and assist with procedures and activities of daily living; assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provide feedback to the RN and report changes in patient status.

2700 is a 20-bed Postpartum unit providing service and care to mother-baby couplets who are well, but additionally treating mothers with pre-eclampsia, newborns whose mothers are diagnosed with chorioamnionitis, high risk postpartum conditions such as Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, and surgical patients who have undergone C-section, post-partum tubal ligation, and/or hysterectomy during childbirth. This is a fast-paced unit that provides staff with the extremely rewarding opportunity to impact and educate new families as well as work through adoption and surrogate scenarios.

What can you Expect as a Patient Care Technician?

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living and assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. They provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.

The Patient Care Technician performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. They also must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients as well as point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, they may also apply simple dressings, placement, and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.

Candidates without previous PCT experience in a hospital-based setting will be required to attend a 7 day mandatory training course. This course is held during weekdays and daylight hours. All 7 days are mandatory and are scheduled in a structured classroom setting.

Shifts/Hours:

This is a full time role that works 6:30am to 7pm and 6:30pm to 7am shifts. This role works rotating holidays and weekends.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • One of the following:
    • 1 year of general healthcare experience
    • Enrollment in PT/OT/PA Program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation
    • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
  • Advanced Skills (required as needed based on unit need & patient population): Phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, Basic Arrythmia Course Completion (for telemetry and ED units)
  • Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class preferred
  • EMT or Paramedic (or in a program) preferred
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Other clearances may be required based on department of hire
