PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and training, and in compliance with regulations set by the organization, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines. Supports a safe and clean working environment and participates in quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Related Education:
  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education about adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
Treatment:
  • Welcome patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, and perform necessary procedures including cannulation and administration of heparin.
  • Monitor and respond to patient responses during dialysis, record vital signs, and manage treatment termination and documentation.
  • Ensure safety alarms are active, maintain accurate records, and communicate any changes in patient condition to registered nurses or supervisors.
Staff Related:
  • Participate in recruitment, orientation, and ongoing training of staff, and serve as a preceptor as per regulations.
  • Collaborate on quality standards and staff education related to ESRD regulations and CQI activities.
Education/Communication:
  • Partner with RN and IDT to educate staff on water system integrity, environmental safety, and organizational policies.
  • Contribute to training programs and monitor care processes through CQI activities.
Maintenance/Technical:
  • Maintain facility cleanliness, prepare equipment, and perform safety checks.
Record Keeping:
  • Document treatment data, review treatment sheets, and manage lab specimen collection and storage.
Infection Control:
  • Support infection control audits, reinforce practices, and participate in staff and patient education.
Transitional Care Unit:
  • Manage transitional care for new patients, including education and coordination of treatment options.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Describe physical requirements, travel, and work environment considerations.
Education and Licenses:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D., valid PCT certification, and required licensures.
Experience and Skills:
  • Minimum of five years patient care experience preferred; completion of dialysis training and CPR required.

The pay rate varies based on location and qualifications: Hourly Rate: $18.50 - $28.00. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, parental leave.
