Qualifications

General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for a Patient Care Tech Pre/Post Surgery to join our team at Harbor Hospital!

As a Patient Care Tech Pre/Post Surgery, you will function as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical staff/providers. Assists nursing and medical staff with procedures and tests, and patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Performs specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, electrocardiography (EKG), and documentation in the health record.

Primary Duties:
  1. Assists patients with ADLs and personal hygiene. Assists with patient mobilization, rehabilitation, use of crutches/walkers, and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers. Collects specimens; performs venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtains EKGs; applies electrodes; initiates physiologic monitoring; inserts IV catheters, changes IV sites and dressings, and inspects IV sites. Assists in measuring and documenting patient's intake and output (I&O). Takes and records vital signs, height, weight, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, and other pertinent data in the health record.
  2. Performs routine treatments such as Foley catheter care, suctioning, dressing changes, wound care, turning and positioning, postmortem care, maintenance of drainage tubes, oxygen equipment setup, shave preps, and assistance with traction, casts, slings, supports, and immobilization devices. Assists with pre-procedural/pre-operative preparations and acts as a scrub assistant during surgeries.
  3. Participates in cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of instrumentation according to infection control standards. Maintains patient comfort, confidentiality, and dignity. Performs patient observation duties and applies restraints. Prepares patients for examinations and procedures.
  4. Rounds on patients, reports changes or concerns to the RN and care team, and assists in CPR. Participates in patient/family teaching and responds to questions courteously and respectfully.
  5. Maintains cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment, assists with environmental services, transports patients, and completes errands. Orders supplies, stocks equipment, and maintains supply rooms.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 12 months' experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • CNA from the relevant district.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support).
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred.
  • Experience as a care technician or surgical/scrub technician; healthcare experience in acute or long-term care; student nurse in senior year preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
