Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Postpartum & Newborn Unit to support the nursing team in in-patient and out-patient care. The role requires assisting with vital signs, hygiene, and patient comfort in a fast-paced unit.

Responsibilities include assisting with admissions, transfers, discharges, and routine procedures under supervision, with emphasis on infection control, documentation, and teamwork in the John Pappajohn Pavilion.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members and health care staff, verbally, electronically and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
  • Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments and supplies.
  • Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal.
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, and collecting specimens.
  • Perform special duties as taught by the nurse in charge including phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site care.
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Patient Care Technician for their Postpartum & Newborn Unit to assist members of the nursing team in provision of multiple types of patient care in in-patient and out-patient care areas. Their work requires familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures used in delivering patient care.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.

Carryout medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.

Performsimple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.

Performspecial duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.

Assistwith patient admission, transfers, and discharges.

Directly providefor patients' personal hygiene and comfort.

Turn, positions and ambulates patients.

Transportpatients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.

Feedpatients, servedrinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.

Assistpatients with bedpans and urinals and recordoutput.

Participatein nursing care conferences; reportpertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.

Providefor patient comfort measures through social interactions.

Shareresponsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.

May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.

Cleanareas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment

Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Percent of Time: 50-90%
Schedule: 50-90% Evening (1500-2330) position with every other weekend, holidays as assigned.
Location:John Pappajohn Pavilion
Rotations: Rotating holidays
Merit Pay Plan: Pay Grade 5
