Purpose and Scope
The PCT functions as part of the Inpatient Services Hemodialysis Healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, and regulations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide patient care under RN supervision in the dialysis suite, excluding ICU settings
- Report and document incidents, complaints, or problems
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment; support quality improvement initiatives
- Set up and prime dialysis equipment as directed, ensuring safety and compliance
- Greet patients, check on well-being, and report observations
- Obtain vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment
- Assist with cannulation and report difficulties
- Accurately document treatment data in patient records and systems
- Calculate and program dialysis machine settings as prescribed
- Ensure safety alarms are active, collect specimens, and deliver to lab
- Monitor patient response, evaluate problems, and intervene as directed
- Assist with venous access and patient discharge procedures
- Comply with all applicable policies, laws, and regulations
- Assist with departmental projects and other duties as assigned
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Work involves computer use, patient interaction, and travel between facilities
- Environment typical of healthcare settings; potential exposure to infectious materials
- Heavy lifting and patient assistance required; equipment handling up to 200 lbs.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High School Diploma required
- No experience necessary; 6 months preferred in related fields
- Must obtain CCHT certification within 18 months
- Effective communication skills required
- Color blindness testing required; accommodations considered
