Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities including patient satisfaction initiatives.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Related

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor patient response.
  • Record vital signs, weight, and treatment parameters before, during, and after dialysis.
  • Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders, ensuring safety alarms are enabled.
  • Document all treatment data accurately and report significant changes to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Perform safety checks on equipment and respond to any abnormal findings.
  • Assist with laboratory specimen collection and ensure proper infection control practices.

Staff and Communication

  • Assist in training direct care staff as supervised by a nurse.
  • Maintain a safe, clean environment and ensure all areas meet hygiene standards.

Record Keeping

  • Participate in CQI activities and document treatment data accurately in designated systems.
  • Prepare and organize patient charts and laboratory requisitions.

Infection Control

  • Support infection control policies and participate in audits and education efforts.

Transitional Care Unit

  • Follow patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, providing education and coordination for transition to home therapies.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Requires ability to perform heavy lifting, prolonged standing, bending, and assist with patient mobility.
  • Work environment typical of healthcare facilities, with exposure to infectious materials.
Education and Licenses:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet state or CMS certification requirements.
Experience and Skills:
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
