PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Functions as part of the hemodialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI activities, including those related to patient satisfaction, and actively participates in process improvement activities to help patients achieve the FMC Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
STAFF RELATED:
- Participates in the recruitment process for new clinical staff.
- Assists with clinical orientation and ongoing training of all appropriate direct patient care personnel, as well as the orientation of all facility staff to FMS.
- Functions as preceptor in direct patient care training programs to support quality patient care as per FMS standards.
- Delivers and maintains ongoing competency evaluations/audits to ensure performance of other PCTs.
- Collaborates with the Clinical Manager and Education Coordinator to drive FMS quality standards through education regarding ESRD regulatory and legal requirements and CQI practices.
- Assists in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs.
- Provides coaching and developmental support to clinical and facility staff.
Education/Communication:
- Partners with RN and IDT staff to educate personnel on the safety of facility water systems, as allowed by local regulations.
- Partners with RN and IDT staff to educate on maintenance of environmental integrity, including patient and staff safety.
- Ensures strong communication between Clinical Managers, Education Coordinators, staff, and support staff regarding training and development programs.
- Participates in creating and implementing educational programs for PCT staff, including contests and team-based initiatives.
- Coordinates with Clinical Managers and Education Coordinators on scheduling and implementing training programs.
- Monitors patient care processes through CQI activities.
- Ensures policies, procedures, and systems are incorporated into training, including compliance with ethical practices.
PATIENT RELATED:
Assists health care members in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
- Welcomes patients, inquires about their wellbeing, evaluates vascular access for patency, and obtains vital signs and weight pre- and post-treatment.
- Performs vascular access evaluation and cannulation.
- Administers Heparin as delegated or allowed by law.
- Initiates dialysis treatment as prescribed, monitors response, and manages intradialytic problems.
- Records treatment data accurately and timely, including vital signs, treatment parameters, and treatment sheets.
- Reports significant changes in patient condition to the nurse supervisor.
- Performs safety checks and intervenes as needed, documenting all actions.
- Evaluates vascular access during treatment and reports findings.
- Prepares and stores lab specimens as required.
INFECTION CONTROL SPECIALIZATION:
- Supports infection control audits and practices within the clinic.
- Reinforces adherence to infection control policies among staff and patients.
- Participates in education related to infection control during surveys and patient interactions.
MAINTENANCE/TECHNICAL:
- Maintains a safe, clean environment and disinfects equipment between treatments.
- Performs pretreatment alarm testing and ensures all safety devices are active.
- Handles spills and prepares supplies efficiently.
RECORD KEEPING:
- Participates in CQI activities and documents treatment data accurately.
- Prepares patient charts and lab specimens, ensuring proper documentation and storage.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Describes the physical environment and demands, including lifting, standing, and exposure risks.
- Notes requirement for color blindness testing and accommodations.
EDUCATION AND LICENSES:
- High School diploma or G.E.D., with preferred Bachelor's degree.
- CMS-approved certification or meeting certification requirements.
- State licensure and training as required.
- Participation in preceptor and skill-based training programs.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Minimum of five years patient care experience preferred.
- Successful completion of FMCNA dialysis training and CPR certification required for employment continuation.
