Job summary

The University of Virginia Health System seeks a Patient Care Technician in Perianesthesia to support patients before, during, and after surgery. You will work with nurses, providers, and the perioperative team to ensure compassionate, safe care and smooth patient flow.

Responsibilities include direct and indirect patient care, preparing the clinical environment, assisting with admissions, collecting specimens, and maintaining supplies.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • AHA BLS certification required; exceptions apply for non-certified hires prior to May 11, 2026.
  • Must have one of the following Virginia credentials: CNA, EMT, Combat Medic/TCC, LPN, nursing program graduate, PCT certification, or enrolled nursing students with clinical experience.

As a Patient Care Technician in Perianesthesia, you will play an important role in supporting patients throughout their surgical journey while working alongside nurses, providers, and the broader perioperative team.

You will provide hands‑on patient care, monitor and communicate changes in patient condition, and help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for patients and families.

Position Summary

The Patient Care Technician provides safe, compassionate direct and indirect patient care to individuals receiving care within the Perianesthesia environment. Under the direction of the nursing and medical team, this role assists patients with comfort, personal hygiene, mobility, safety, and other care needs while supporting the overall plan of care.

The Patient Care Technician also assists with obtaining and documenting patient information, collecting specimens, maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring the clinical environment is clean, safe, and prepared to support patient care.

What You'll Do
Patient Care & Safety
  • Provide safe, compassionate, and respectful care to patients across a variety of ages and conditions.
  • Assist patients with comfort, personal hygiene, mobility, positioning, and other activities of daily living.
  • Follow established nursing and medical plans of care and UVA Health policies and procedures.
  • Observe patients for changes in physical or mental condition and promptly communicate concerns to the Registered Nurse, manager, or appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Support patient identification and safety protocols in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to time‑sensitive patient care needs.
Clinical Support
  • Obtain and document initial and ongoing patient information as directed by UVA Health policies and procedures.
  • Assist with admissions and other patient care activities as assigned.
  • Obtain or assist with the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived testing.
  • Assist the clinical team with patient preparation and other perioperative support activities.
  • Maintain and restock supplies, equipment, educational materials, and patient care resources.
  • Assist with maintaining equipment, instruments, and the clinical environment according to established procedures
Teamwork & Patient Experience
  • Work collaboratively with Registered Nurses, providers, anesthesia professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent

Experience: No experience required

Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. For Non-Certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is not required, as relevant experience will be accepted in its place.

Must have one of the following:
  • Certified Nursing Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Military Corpsmen/Medic (Combat Medic Specialist / Tactical Combat Casualty Care / Tactical Paramedic) NREMT certification or Tactical Responder Certification
  • LPN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Graduate of a certified nursing program
  • Patient Care Technician Certification, preferred National Center of Competency Testing
  • Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Clinical Experience and Didactic
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires frequently bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs and > 100lbs (Home Health Aide only). May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $16.37 - $23.36 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
