Job description

These roles provide direct patient care under the supervision of Registered Nurses or other Medical Professionals. These positions primarily focus on assisting patients with activities of daily living while also monitoring vital signs and reporting any changes in patient condition. They also play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and clean environment for patients. These roles perform a variety of tasks, such as taking patient histories, measuring and monitoring vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting with minor procedures. Individual contributors with responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty spend the majority of time in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are typically limited without additional education or significant training and experience. Specialty license or certification required which is acquired through training and/or experience. This career stream will be most commonly applied to patient care areas. Requires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and require vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision. Problems are typically of a routine nature but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. Communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent

Experience: No experience required

Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required.

Minimum Requirements
  • Certified to practice as a Nurse Aide in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR must meet one of the following criteria (required):
  • Successful completion of the UVa PCT Education Program OR Successful completion of another PCT Education Program that has been approved by NPDS.
  • Documented proof of at least 1 year of recent (within past 2 years) experience in a similar PCT role from an outside institution. Candidate must successfully complete a written exam and must successfully demonstrate clinical skills during 6 month probationary period.
  • Passage of a nationally recognized and accredited PCT Certification exam. (Example - National Healthcareer Association - C-PCT). Present Certificate as verification.
  • OR must meet one of the following criteria (required):
  • Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Medical/Surgical Clinical Experience and Didactic are exempt from the Certified Nurse Aide requirement.
  • EMT or above certification. Candidate will complete the UVA PCT Course within 6 month probationary period
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Physical Demands

Job requires frequently bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50lbs and > 100lbs (Home Health Aide only). May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
