The UVA Earn While You Learn Trainee Program offers structured coursework and paid on-the-job training as a full-time, benefitted employee.

Patient Care Techs perform various patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a Medical Center Registered Nurse (RN) in inpatient or outpatient settings.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED; no experience necessary. Position Compensation: $16.00/hour + benefits. You will be paid for 40 hours/week. UVA Health will cover all course and certification fees in exchange for a 1-year full-time employment commitment after course completion.

Patient Care Technician Trainee (PCT) - Earn While You Learn Program
  • Performs patient care and administrative functions under RN supervision in inpatient/outpatient settings.
  • Assists patients with personal care for recovery.
  • Performs basic nursing skills delegated by RN, following policies to promote health and wellness.
  • Ensures a safe environment and safe care delivery.
  • Provides administrative support and maintains skills and competencies.
  • Captures patient data such as vital signs, weights, and intake/output measurements.
  • Reports changes in patient condition and abnormal data promptly to RN.
  • Assists with personal hygiene, ADLs, exercise, and ambulation.
  • Handles specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • Supports healthcare staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Monitors for safety hazards and reports hazards immediately.
  • Verifies patient identity before interventions.
  • Maintains safe transfer and positioning practices.
  • Cleans equipment and performs safety checks.
  • Reports incidents promptly via the institution's process.
  • Follows fire, emergency, and infection control protocols.
  • Supports supply management and inventory.
  • Sets professional development goals.
  • Completes mandatory training and in-service requirements timely.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • No experience required
  • No licensure/certifications required
  • Physical demands include frequent bending/stooping, lifting 20-50 lbs, and exposure to chemicals, blood, and infectious materials
