Purpose and Scope:
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Related
- Assist in patient education regarding adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
- Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor patient response.
- Record vital signs, weight, and treatment parameters accurately.
- Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatment following prescribed orders and protocols.
- Monitor and respond to intradialytic problems, document findings, and communicate significant changes to nursing staff.
- Ensure safety alarms are active, perform safety checks, and document interventions.
- Prepare specimens, maintain infection control, and organize supplies efficiently.
Staff Related
- Assist in training staff and support continuous quality improvement activities.
- Participate in educational programs and promote infection control practices.
Record Keeping
- Document treatment data, review treatment sheets, and prepare charts and specimens properly.
Infection Control
- Support infection control audits, reinforce policies, and educate staff and patients.
Transitional Care Unit
- Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks, providing education and coordinating care.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Perform tasks involving lifting, standing, bending, and assisting with patient mobility, with accommodations as needed.
Education and Licenses
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Valid PCT certification and applicable state licensure.
Experience and Skills
- Preferred two years of patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.

Home Therapies Program (Not Home Assist)
- Assist with home dialysis tasks under supervision, including patient education, specimen collection, equipment setup, and supply management.
Inventory
- Maintain supply par levels and assist with inventory management for the home program and patient supplies.
