PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, following organization policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Related Education:

• Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease processes.

Treatment:

• Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor vital signs and weights before, during, and after treatment.
• Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders, ensuring safety alarms are active and documenting all relevant data.
• Respond to intradialytic issues, evaluate patient responses, and perform interventions as needed.
• Ensure proper documentation, including treatment sheets, lab specimens, and patient responses.

Staff Support and Education:

• Assist in training direct care staff and follow all organizational policies and infection control practices.

Record Keeping and Quality:

• Participate in CQI activities, accurately enter treatment data, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

Infection Control and Transition Care:

• Support infection control audits, reinforce patient education, and assist in transitional dialysis care for new patients.

Physical Demands and Conditions:

• Perform tasks involving heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and patient assistance, with accommodations available for disabilities.

Education and Licenses:

• High school diploma or G.E.D., with required state and/or national certification, and valid licensure.

Experience and Skills:

• Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.

Additional Information:

Position is part-time, entry-level, in the healthcare industry, with a focus on patient care in a hospital or clinical setting. Hemodialysis certification is required.
