Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities. Complies with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations from federal, state, and local agencies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient-Related:

  • Assist in providing patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor patient response.
  • Record vital signs, weight, and treatment parameters accurately and timely.
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders, ensuring safety and proper documentation.
  • Respond to intradialytic problems and communicate significant changes to the nurse or supervisor.
  • Perform safety checks on equipment and monitor patient status throughout treatment.

Staff-Related:

  • Assist in training direct care staff under supervision.

Record Keeping:

  • Participate in CQI activities and document treatment data accurately.
  • Prepare and organize patient charts and lab specimens.

Infection Control:

  • Support infection control practices and participate in audits and education.

Transitional Care Unit:

  • Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks, providing education and coordinating care.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

EDUCATION AND LICENSES:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet CMS or state certification requirements.
