Job description

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and regulatory requirements. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives, including patient satisfaction and process enhancements.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Related

Education:

• Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures such as OLC, AMP, UKM, and disease/process access.

Treatment:

• Welcome patients, assess wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, and perform cannulation and heparin administration as delegated.
• Obtain vital signs, weight, and perform pre-treatment vascular access evaluations.
• Initiate dialysis as prescribed, monitor response, and manage intradialytic issues.
• Discontinue treatment following procedures, evaluate patient status, and document all relevant data.
• Ensure safety alarms are active, record treatment details accurately, and report significant changes to the nurse or supervisor.
• Monitor vascular access during treatment, prepare lab specimens, and maintain infection control protocols.

Staff Related

• Assist in training direct care staff under supervision.

Education/Communication:

• Adhere to organizational policies, maintain a safe and clean environment, and perform equipment preparation and alarm testing.

Record Keeping:

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data accurately, review treatment sheets, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

Infection Control:

• Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families on infection prevention.

Transitional Care Unit:

• Support patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis education and supply management.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

• Require physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting, standing, and bending, with accommodations as needed. May involve exposure to infectious materials and travel between facilities.

Education and Licenses:

• High school diploma or G.E.D., with necessary state or CMS certification and licensure.

Experience and Skills:

• Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.

The hourly rate is $23.00 - $29.00, with benefits including health insurance, 401(k), paid time off, and parental leave.
