Purpose and Scope

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, supporting quality improvement activities, and ensuring patient satisfaction.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Related Education

• Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease process, and access.

Treatment

• Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, obtain vital signs, initiate and monitor dialysis, evaluate responses, document treatments, and ensure safety protocols are followed.

Staff Related

• Participate in recruitment, training, and performance evaluation of clinical staff; support quality standards through education and training.

Education and Communication

• Collaborate with staff to educate on water system integrity, environmental safety, and organizational initiatives; facilitate training programs and CQI activities.

Maintenance and Technical Tasks

• Maintain cleanliness and safety of equipment and environment; prepare machines and supplies for treatment.

Record Keeping

• Document treatment data accurately, review and complete treatment sheets, prepare patient charts, and handle lab specimen collection.

Infection Control

• Assist with infection control audits, reinforce practices, and participate in staff and patient education on infection prevention.

Transitional Care Unit

• Support new patients through their first 4 weeks, provide education, coordinate care, and assist with home dialysis transition.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires physical ability to perform patient care tasks, including lifting, standing, and bending, in a healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials. Travel between facilities may be necessary.

Education and Licenses

• High school diploma or G.E.D.; certification as PCT or equivalent; relevant state licensure and training.

Experience and Skills

• Minimum five years patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
