Patient Care Technician - PCT CCHT

Purpose and Scope:

Functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under supervision, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations. Responsible for operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and participating in quality improvement activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient-Related
  • Assist in patient education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease process.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor patient response.
  • Record vital signs, weight, and treatment data accurately.
  • Prepare patients for dialysis, manage machine programming, and ensure safety alarms are active.
  • Discontinue treatment following procedures, evaluate patient status, and document all interventions and observations.
Staff-Related
  • Assist in training other care staff under supervision.
Record Keeping
  • Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data, and prepare patient charts and lab specimens.
Infection Control
  • Support infection control policies, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.
Transitional Care Unit
  • Manage care for new patients in their first 4 weeks, coordinate education, and assist in transition to home dialysis.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Includes travel, heavy lifting, prolonged standing, and exposure to infectious materials. Must pass color blindness test; accommodations available.

Education and Licenses:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet state or CMS certification and licensure requirements.
Experience and Skills:
  • Preferred previous patient care experience; must complete dialysis training and CPR certification.
