Purpose and Scope

As a Patient Care Technician (PCT), you will be part of the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Your responsibilities include setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patient-Related
  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease management.
  • Welcome patients, assess their wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, and perform cannulation and heparin administration as permitted by law.
  • Collect vital signs, weight, and perform pre- and post-treatment assessments.
  • Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders.
  • Document treatment parameters, patient responses, and any interventions performed.
  • Maintain infection control standards and ensure safety protocols are followed.
Staff and Communication
  • Assist in training staff members and ensure environmental safety and cleanliness.
  • Support infection control practices and participate in audits and educational activities.
Record Keeping
  • Accurately document all treatment data and patient interactions in designated systems.
  • Prepare and organize patient charts and laboratory specimens.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Perform tasks requiring physical strength, including lifting and moving patients and equipment.
  • Work in a healthcare environment with exposure to infectious materials and moderate noise levels.
Education and Licenses
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet state and/or national certification requirements.
  • Maintain required licensure and certifications, including CPR.
Experience and Skills
  • Previous patient care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
