Purpose and Scope

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Patient-Related

• Assist in patient education regarding dialysis procedures and disease management.
• Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
• Monitor patient vital signs, weight, and response to treatment, and document appropriately.
• Ensure safety alarms are active and respond to intradialytic problems.
• Discontinue treatment following protocols, evaluate patient status, and document all procedures.
• Assist with laboratory specimen collection and infection control practices.

Staff and Communication

• Assist in training staff and educate patients on treatment and safety protocols.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment, disinfect equipment, and ensure proper documentation.

Additional Responsibilities

• Participate in CQI activities, maintain accurate records, and support transitional care for new patients.
• Follow physical demands and safety procedures, including lifting and movement of patients and equipment.
• Meet educational and licensing requirements, including certification and training.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or G.E.D.
• State and/or national certification as required.
• Previous healthcare experience preferred but willing to train.
• Ability to perform physical tasks required for patient care.
