Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsibilities include setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Related

• Assist in providing patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access.
• Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin as delegated, and monitor patient response.
• Collect vital signs, weight, and laboratory specimens; document treatment details accurately.
• Ensure safety alarms are active, perform safety checks, and intervene as needed.
• Assist with infection control and transitional care for new patients.

Staff Related

• Assist in training direct care staff as supervised by a nurse.

Record Keeping

• Participate in CQI activities, document treatment data, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

Infection Control

• Support infection control practices and participate in audits and education.

Transitional Care Unit

• Support new patients through their first 4 weeks, reinforce education, and coordinate care.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Perform physical tasks including lifting, moving patients, and standing for prolonged periods. Must pass color blindness test. Work environment involves exposure to infectious materials.

Education and Licenses

• High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Must meet certification and licensure requirements as per state and CMS standards.

Experience and Skills

• Previous patient care experience preferred; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR required.
