PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting quality improvement activities to meet organizational goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Related

Education: Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures such as OLC, AMP, UKM, and disease process/access.

Treatment: Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, obtain vital signs, initiate and monitor dialysis, evaluate patient response, and document all procedures accurately. Ensure safety alarms are enabled, perform safety checks, and report any abnormalities to the nurse or supervisor.

Staff Related

Assist in training direct care staff under supervision of a nurse.

Education/Communication

Follow all policies, maintain a clean environment, prepare for dialysis, and document treatment details accurately.

Record Keeping

Participate in CQI activities, enter data promptly, review treatment sheets, and prepare lab specimens.

Infection Control

Support infection control practices, participate in audits, and educate patients and families.

Transitional Care Unit

Follow new patients through initial dialysis, reinforce education, coordinate care, and assist with modality transition.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work involves physical activity including lifting, standing, and bending, with accommodations available. Must pass color blindness test, and work environment includes exposure to infectious materials.

Education and Licenses

High school diploma or G.E.D., with required state or national certification and licensure. Commitment to organizational values and customer service is essential.

Experience and Skills

Preferred previous patient care experience; successful completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
