Profile

Purpose and Scope: Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse, complying with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsible for setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe environment, and supporting quality improvement activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Patient Related

• Assist in patient education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease process.
• Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
• Obtain vital signs, weight, and perform necessary evaluations before, during, and after dialysis.
• Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments, ensuring safety and documentation.
• Evaluate vascular access during treatment and respond to any issues.
• Collect laboratory specimens and ensure infection control practices.
• Support patient transition to home therapies and coordinate care as needed.

1. Staff Related

• Assist in training staff on dialysis procedures and safety protocols.

1. Education/Communication

• Follow organizational policies, maintain a safe environment, and ensure proper cleaning and preparation of equipment.

1. Record Keeping

• Accurately document treatment data, review treatment sheets, and prepare patient charts and lab requisitions.

1. Infection Control

• Support infection control audits, reinforce practices, and participate in education efforts.

1. Transitional Care Unit

• Manage care for new dialysis patients, coordinate education, and assist with treatment setup and supplies.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Includes lifting, standing, bending, and occasional pushing/pulling. Requires travel between facilities and adherence to safety and infection control protocols.

Education and Licenses

High School diploma or G.E.D., with state or CMS certification and licensure as required. Commitment to organization values and customer service standards.

Experience and Skills

Preferred previous patient care experience; completion of dialysis training and CPR certification required.
