Patient Care Technician

UPMC West Shore is seeking a Patient Care Technician for their Perianesthesia Department!

Note: This is a casual position with day shifts, requiring 36 hours to be worked over 6 weeks. The title and starting pay rate may vary based on experience.

Position Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs various patient care duties, including assisting with procedures and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients. Responsibilities also include completing medical record documentation, reporting equipment malfunctions, and supporting universal unit activities like responding to call lights and passing meal trays.

Establishing professional relationships and effective communication with patients, families, colleagues, and other departments is essential. The PCT provides feedback to RNs, reports patient status changes, and offers patient and family instruction under RN supervision.

Responsibilities
  1. Perform duties according to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  2. Complete assigned tasks and report equipment issues promptly.
  3. Maintain effective communication and professional relationships across departments.
  4. Participate in self-review and seek feedback for continuous improvement.
  5. Communicate clearly with the healthcare team, respecting cultural diversity and promoting safety.
  6. Document accurately in the medical record and complete clerical tasks as needed.
  7. Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills such as peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, and NG tube management, based on departmental needs.
  8. Perform core nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs, point-of-care testing, vital signs, I&O, telemetry, and specimen collection.
  9. Provide patient and family instruction under RN guidance and apply restraints as per protocol.
  10. Assist with procedures and therapies, report patient status changes, and adhere to safety policies.
  11. Support departmental initiatives, participate in quality projects, and view challenges as opportunities for improvement.
