Patient Care Technician

UPMC West Shore is looking for a Patient Care Technician for their Perianesthesia Unit!

• This is a Casual Position with Day/Evening Shifts – 36 hours to be worked within 6 weeks

Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors
• Assume additional duties as assigned
• Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department and communicate effectively with other departments
• Contribute to universal unit activities, including responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients
• Receive and act on feedback, identify learning needs, and participate in self-review
• Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team, demonstrating cultural diversity awareness and supporting workplace safety
• Document in the medical record according to established procedures and complete department clerical functions as needed
• Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills such as peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia and NG tube clamping and removal, as required by department operational need
• Perform nursing core duties, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients), point‑of‑care testing, vital signs, telemetry, dressings, restraints, EKG, and specimen collection
• Provide instruction to patients and their families under RN direction, applying, monitoring, and removing restraints as per protocol
• Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies and report changes in patient status to the RN
• Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures, including standard precautions and safety protocols
• Suggest and support departmental changes, take responsibility for assignments, and contribute to quality initiatives

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is required
• Must have either: 1‑year of general healthcare experience; enrollment in PT/OT/PA/RN program with at least one clinical rotation; or completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
• Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class
• Successful completion of basic information system training
• Microcomputer experience preferred
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

• CPR required within 30 days of hire (AHA standards including didactic and skills demonstration)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
• Act 33 with renewal
• Act 34 with renewal
• Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
