Job summary

Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk is hiring a Patient Care Technician for the Ortho/Med Surg Unit 1 East. This full-time night shift runs from 6pm to 6am on a 24-bed unit caring for orthopedic and med/surg patients.

Under the supervision of a nurse, you will provide basic patient care, support admissions and discharges, monitor conditions, and assist with mobility. High school diploma required; BLS within 90 days; CNA/NCMA/NCPCT or equivalent accepted.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
• BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
• Minimum of CNA, NCMA, NCPCT or equivalent certification; Navy Hospital Corps or EMS/EMT acceptable.
• One year of health care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care under the supervision of a professional nurse.
• Support admissions and discharge processes.
• Observe patients' conditions and report changes to the nurse.
• Assist with mobility and daily activities on the unit.

Education

BLS Certification (within 90 days)

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)

National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)

US Navy Hospital Corps School (for relevant training)

EMT/Paramedic/EMR/EMS (as applicable)

RN/LPN/RT/PT clinical experience (current student)

Recent nursing assistant experience (within last 3 years)

Job description

Sentara is currently hiring a Patient Care Technician on the Ortho/ Med Surg Unit 1 East to work at Sentara Leigh Hospital located in Norfolk.

Hours/Shift:

Full-time, nightshift. Approximately 6pm to 6am

Department/Position Overview:

This 24-bed unit works with patients that have had Orthopedic Surgery and med/surg patients as needed. The majority of our patients have had joint replacements, spine surgery or hand surgery. The ortho techs on the unit will also be assisting with the mobility of the patients. You will receive specialized ortho training on the best practices of caring for these types of patients. Patient Care Technicians are unlicensed staff members who are accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support the admissions and discharge process, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nurse.

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Certification/Licensure

• American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
• Minimum requirements: Must have one of the following
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
  • Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
  • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
  • Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
  • Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT or PT, or
  • Current work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.

Experience

One year of prior health care experience preferred.
