Overview

As a bedside caregiver, IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) who will provide a phenomenal patient experience by anticipating the needs of patients such as providing drinks, assisting with meal ordering, encouraging walking, assisting with baths, and providing clean linens and gowns.

Our PCAs demonstrate compassion, a caring bedside manner, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. They provide clinical assistance to the bedside RN by obtaining vital signs and reporting abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to facilitate rapid treatment. PCAs ensure patient safety through measures like gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity when moving around patients.

Requirements
  • Current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or completion of the IU Health PCA education program
  • Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients
  • Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
  • Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to withstand high tension and stress, maintain concentration amidst interruptions and noise
  • Judgment and initiative in problem resolution
  • Ability to set priorities and manage a high workload efficiently
  • Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities
  • Understanding of infection control principles
  • Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitive movements
  • Basic reading and math skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of good personal hygiene and aseptic techniques
