Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Patient Care Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, education, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served in assigned service.
- Ensure effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment, and critical actions.
- Maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues, and other members of the healthcare team regarding patient status and care provided.
- Take initiative to do more than expected or required, acting proactively to improve job performance and create new opportunities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient's care plan from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care.
- Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement activities.
Specific job functions may include but are not limited to:
- Welcoming patients and verifying proper identification.
- Preparing patients for assessment, admission, physical examinations, and procedures.
- Recognizing and responding to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.
- Providing care appropriate to the patient's age.
- Obtaining clinical data such as temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, documenting findings, and notifying RN of abnormal results.
- Drawing blood via venipuncture or capillary collection, ensuring proper labeling and processing.
- Performing EKGs as directed.
- Maintaining and checking the functionality of equipment and emergency supplies.
- Applying bandages, slings, compression boots, and hypothermia blankets as directed.
- Assisting in patient transport and with meals as needed.
- Checking and restocking supplies.
- Preparing rooms for new admissions.
- Providing hygiene and comfort care, assisting with dressing, and managing patient belongings.
- Performing and documenting glucose finger sticks and other specimen collections.
- Providing post-mortem care.
- Monitoring and documenting patient weights, intake, and output.
- Ensuring patient safety by prompt response to call lights and communicating changes to RN.
- Modifying care based on patient needs, including cultural, language, and sensory considerations.
- Performing other duties and projects as assigned.
- Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Completion of a recognized program such as CNA, Medical Assistant, PCT, or equivalent medical background (e.g., EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA).
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt, and demonstrate accountability, teamwork, and dedication to high-quality patient care.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience or certification in phlebotomy, EKG, vital signs, and blood sugar testing.
- At least one year of PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting or eligibility for the HMH PCT apprenticeship program.
- Completion of a PCT program including Phlebotomy, EKG, and nursing assistant training.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) Certification within 60 days of hire.
