- Suggests and supports changes within the department. Assumes responsibility for assignments and views problems as challenges. Demonstrates awareness of how behavior affects the efficient functioning of the department. Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.
- Must routinely perform core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients), point of care testing (e.g., blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), simple dressings, restraints, bladder scans, specimen collections, and ticket to ride. All competencies must be achieved.
- Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported appropriately. Establishes effective communication with other departments and maintains professional, respectful relationships. Contributes to universal unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Constructively receives feedback and guidance. Communicates learning needs to the unit director. Takes proactive steps to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. Participates in self-review as requested.
- Communicates clearly and effectively with all healthcare team members. Understands cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment issues in health professions. Supports workplace safety and develops productive internal and external relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment.
- Provides patient care including assisting with procedures and activities of daily living. Supports physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Reports patient status changes to the RN and provides feedback.
- Instructs patients and families under RN supervision. May apply, monitor, and remove restraints as per protocol.
- Adheres strictly to policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information. Complies with safety policies, including standard precautions.
- Documents in the medical record per procedures. Performs work efficiently and completes clerical duties as needed.
- Performs according to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Achieves and maintains competency in at least one advanced skill (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley catheter removal, arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube management) based on department needs.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Enrollment in a Nursing Program with at least 1 year of healthcare experience, or 6 months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days, or completion of one nursing clinical rotation.
- Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class and basic information system training. Microcomputer experience preferred.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Limited medication access, restricted to distribution to nurses.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:CPR certification per AHA standards within 30 days of hire. ACLS preferred. BLS or CPR required. Act 34 clearance required.
